Merino Wool Ski Base Layers

The best ski base layers and thermals use pure natural wool or merino wool. Wool is often blended with other fibres to help bring down the cost and modify the performance characteristics. If wool is used in a ski base layer it is usually merino wool because this is the softest - with no loss of

performance. Merino wool can also be woven into particularly thin and light weight fabrics - making it ideal for skiing. Woollen ski base layers provide superb insulation, even when wet due to sweat or snow. Wool is high wicking, so your sweat is drawn away from your body where it might otherwise cool and freeze (obviously doing more harm than good) when you stop exercising eg for a rest or to take a chair lift. Wool is naturally antimicrobial, reducing odors over long use. The main drawbacks of 100% pure wool are durability - wool is less hard wearing than most blended fabrics; it needs to be hand washed and takes a long time to dry and it is more expensive. This is why manufacturers produce fabrics using a blend of wool and synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, or elastane. Synthetics enhance the lifespan of the garment, making it more resistant to wear and tear. Synthetics are excellent at wicking sweat away from the skin, helping to dry faster. Blends often include elastane for better fit and freedom of movement
