boots are the stability they provide whilst carrying heavy loads and their ability to “edge” while climbing steeper slopes. Most mountaineering boots support automatic or semi-automatic crampons for ice travel and are built to withstand the cold, often being double-layered (with an inner liner and outer shell) for warmth in sub-zero temps. Mountaineering boots are therefore used for glacier travel, ice climbing, high altitude trekking and technical alpine ascents. Most people hiking a mountain in the UK opt for less technical hiking boots, with more flex than a full-on mountaineering boot, to make walking easier.
