Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and explore the milestones that have defined Lib Tech’s epic history.
1983: Mike Olson Hand Builds 5 Finned Snowboard
In 1983, Mike Olson crafted his very first prototype snowboard. Featuring five fins, a wide floaty nose, and a deep side cut inspired by surfing, it performed amazingly in powder but was a bit of a struggle on hard pack snow. Back to the drawing board, Mike!
1985: Mike Olson Pioneers Deep Sidecut Snowboards
By 1985, Mike had developed his first finless snowboard design through the Mervin family’s big brother Gnu. With wide noses and deep side cuts, this board marked the birth of snowboarding on hard pack.
1990: Lib Tech Officially Launches
In a stroke of genius while brainstorming a new name, Mike and Pete stumbled upon “Liberace Technologies.” It made them laugh, and thus, Lib Tech was born. The first Lib Tech line brought vibrant graphics and high-kicked noses and tails inspired by skateboarding.
1993: Jamie Lynn Joins the Family
The early '90s welcomed Jamie Lynn to Lib Tech. He quickly became a global snowboard superstar with his unique power freestyle. Jamie's timeless art and style, both on snow and canvas, continue to inspire snowboarders worldwide.
2004: The Birth of Magne-Traction® Serrated Edge Technology
Steven Cobb and the Lib Tech ExperiMENTAL Division introduced the world to Magne-Traction® serrated edge technology. With seven main contact points, it was like turning ice into powder, forever changing snowboarding.
2004/2005: Travis Rice Joins Lib Tech
2004 marked the beginning of a legendary partnership with Travis Rice, a visionary athlete. Together, they created dream boards like the T.Rice Pro and the Orca, featured in blockbuster films like The Art of Flight and The Fourth Phase.
2006: The Skate Banana Revolutionises Snowboard Contours
The Skate Banana was born, flipping snowboarding on its head with rocker between the feet and camber underfoot. This innovative design spread through Lib Tech's line, offering riders unprecedented freedom and fun.
2018: The Orca - Not Your Gutless Fish!
Travis Rice dreamed of the perfect board, leading to the creation of the Orca. This short, wide powder predator took off like a rocket, combining playful versatility with serious performance. Plus, every Orca sold supports the Orca Conservancy!
2023: Techno Pop Snowboard Construction
Techno Pop construction, originally designed for surfboards, made its way to snowboards. This ultra-light, ultra-snappy carbon construction was perfect for Travis Rice's Apex Golden Orca, featuring the groundbreaking “Anti Matter” 3-D tips and tails.
The Journey is Not Over Yet
Lib Tech continues to experiment and innovate every day in their dream factory, crafting dream boards out of dream materials. The adventure is far from over, and Lib Tech is thrilled to have you along for the ride.
