With cutting-edge technology combined with innovative frame solutions, it's no wonder why Gregory have developed a cult following from long-distance backpackers and hikers across the globe. “There to build packs that you trust.”
Gregory backpacks are designed with hand-crafted prototypes in the headquarters of Salt Lake City, Utah. The foundations of this iconic brand can be traced back to the humble origins of a Boy Scout project. Wayne designed his first backpack at the youthful age of 14. With a natural attention to detail and an interest in frame innovation, his interest in pack design grew.
In 1970 Wayne started his own company producing external frame backpacks, the staple design at the time. However, due to technical limitations, Wayne became increasingly dissatisfied. He actively dissolved the company in 1973 and began working as a freelance designer for larger outdoor brands.
After biding his time until internal frame pack design technology had caught up with Wayne's vision, he founded Gregory packs in 1977 in San Diego. The fundamental philosophy was that a pack should be worn, not carried, and Gregory's packs aimed to be as comfortable as possible with a nuanced fit similar to that of a walking boot.
Gregory was the first manufacturer to produce packs in multiple frame, harness and waist belt sizes. This allowed for a tailored fit and optimised comfort. They were the first to design a waist belt that could be adjusted to accommodate different hip sizes, paving the way for modern pack designs. At the forefront of pack innovation, Gregory's material advancements include developing the new bar-tack stitch for improved strength and bonding between webbing and ergonomic back panels.
Gregory expanded throughout the '70s and '80s where industry-leading gear was developed alongside pack innovations. During the ’80s the company launched their revolutionary 22-layer composite granite frame, 50% lighter than standard aluminium. A prominent achievement for the company was their 1999 contract to supply the United States Special Forces with 120 Ib capacity backpacks.
Continuing their commitment to quality, comfort, durability and tailored fits, Gregory have become a prominent leader in the outdoor industry. Specifically designed packs aim to fill the void in a range of disciplines. As a company, they continue to innovate some of the most trusted packs across all market categories.
Allowing the trail, the mountain and the bedrock to inspire every aspect of what they do, Gregory Packs allow you to carry your required gear in comfort.
